Outdoor grow operations in New York are keeping their crops safe with state-of-the-art surveillance systems.
A recent project undertaken by Myers Security LLC in New York’s Southern Tier started with a phone call from Dallas, Texas. “Could you look at a potential cannabis-grow client for us in your state?” asked the team at Sapphire Risk Advisers, a national leader in cannabis business security. Within two days, Greg Myers and his son Brandon were at JRS Naturals on the state’s east side.
After working for 35 years as a security expert for companies that included Ingersoll Rand and Chesapeake Energy, Greg started his own company in 2019. At JRS Naturals, he and Brandon met with the farm’s owners to discuss their needs and conduct a site evaluation. “The outdoor farm was located in a high-risk area out in the middle of nowhere,” reports Greg. “What’s more, there were no real utilities available.”
Taking all of that into consideration, the Myers team – along with Haley Glover from Sapphire – began to put together a plan. After one modification and some adjustments, it was quickly approved. Within two weeks, 4-foot holes were being drilled in the fields for the installation of seven 30-foot towers.
To power the surveillance system, the Myers team dug a 2,000-foot trench for electric and communication wires, which hook up to enclosures mounted on the towers. The heated and fan-cooled enclosures feature battery backup, rugged network switches and power supplies. The system itself includes state-of-the-art SightLogix perimeter detection surveillance cameras – recommended for their dual-lens technology and infrared capabilities – combined with Motorola/Avigilon 360˚ fisheye cameras for the storage and processing areas and Cloud Managed Video Recorders from Eagle Eye Networks.
“JRS Naturals was one of the first New York State grow operations to use the new technology,” says Greg. “Despite wind, rain, snow and fog, the SightLogix cameras will still detect an intruder.”
